Bilateral relations between Ukraine and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

1. Recognition of Ukraine: December 28, 1991.

February 18-20, 2012 – an official visit of the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine;

September 30 – October 4, 2012 – an official visit of the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Jordan;

August 23-25, 2016 – an official visit of the Mayor of Amman;

May 7-11, 2018 – a visit of the Minister of Finance of Ukraine;

July 16, 2018 – a phone call between the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Jordan;

January 25, 2021 – a phone call between the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Deputy Prime Minister – Minister for Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Jordan;

April 13, 2021 – a phone call between the President of Ukraine and the King of Jordan;

July 13, 2021 – an online meeting of the First Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine with the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Jordan;

October 25, 2021 – political consultations between the MFA of Ukraine and the MFAE of Jordan in Amman (at the level of the Deputy Minister);

April 5, 2022 – a meeting of the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine with the Deputy Prime Minister – Minister for Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Jordan in Warsaw;

June 13, 2023 – a phone call between the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Deputy Prime Minister – Minister for Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Jordan.

4. The legal base of the Ukrainian-Jordanian relations consists of 4 interstate agreements, 10 intergovernmental agreements, 11 inter-agency documents, 1 cross-regional agreement.

5. Trade cooperation between Ukraine and Jordan:

Bilateral trade in goods:

In 2021, the trade turnover of goods between Ukraine and Jordan amounted to 215.903 mln. USD. The Ukrainian exports of goods to Jordan amounted to 207.944 mln. USD. The Jordanian exports to Ukraine amounted to 7.959 mln. USD.

The main Ukrainian export products to Jordan in 2021 were cereals (34.7%), ferrous metals (18.6%), fats and oils of animal or vegetable origin (16.5%).

The Ukrainian imports from Jordan consisted mainly of pharmaceuticals (61.9%), products made of ferrous metals (15%) and fertilizers (7.3%).

Bilateral trade in services:

In 2021, the trade turnover of services between Ukraine and Jordan amounted to 5.694 mln. USD.

The existing bilateral high-level bodies:

Joint Ukrainian-Jordanian Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation. Two sessions of the Commission were held in 2005 and 2012.

6. The Ukrainian community in Jordan:

The number of members of the Ukrainian community on the territory of Jordan amounts to around 6.4 thousand people. As of now, 91 citizens of Ukraine are registered in the consular register of the Embassy of Ukraine in Amman. According to official data from the Jordanian side, the number of female citizens of Ukraine who are married to Jordanian citizens is 2.5 thousand people. Ukrainians in Jordan reside mainly in the largest cities: Amman, Irbid, Zarqa, Madaba, Aqaba, Karak.

The year of 2016 saw foundation of a non-governmental organization “Ukrainian House in Jordan” which has a self-titled cultural center where the children have an opportunity to study the Ukrainian language and culture.

7. Diplomatic mission of Ukraine:

Embassy of Ukraine in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan 

Between May and November 2022 multiple planes have flown from Jordan to Czech Republic with weapons destined for Ukraine:[247]

  • Missiles for 9K33M2 Osa-AKM air defense system [delivered by April 2023].[249]
